The Energy Transition Challenge: Lowering CO2 Emissions and Finding Sustainable Alternatives
The chemical industry faces the dual challenge of reducing emissions and moving from fossil-based feedstocks to renewable sources. As syngas (carbon monoxide and hydrogen) is crucial for many processes, transitioning its production from natural gas to sustainable inputs like air, water, and renewable electricity is essential. Ammonia, an emerging energy carrier and hydrogen source, offers a promising solution to meet these needs.
CLARA Technology: Innovating Syngas Production
At the heart of the AEGIS Project, CLARA technology provides an efficient process for producing syngas while reducing CO2 emissions. It extracts hydrogen from ammonia and converts CO2 to carbon monoxide using part of the hydrogen, saving energy and allowing flexible production of CO and hydrogen. This enables customizable syngas compositions, essential for diverse chemical industry applications.
Sinko’s Role in Scaling CLARA Technology
Partners in the AEGIS Project
We are proud to collaborate with esteemed partners in this transformative initiative:
- TNO: Inventor of the CLARA technology and project leader of the AEGIS project.
- Hexion VAD B.V.: A global industrial company that pioneers unique chemistry. In Rotterdam, carbon monoxide is already used to produce feedstocks for the coatings and adhesives industry, ultimately contributing to various products from tile adhesives and latex paints to automotive coatings and tires. With CLARA, Hexion might make its products more sustainable and is therefore involved in developing this application and evaluating future business opportunities.
- Ketjen: Develops catalysts in its R&D center and manufactures them at its factory in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. With the right catalyst, a process can become more efficient and effective. Ketjen is involved in AEGIS to examine and potentially improve the materials used in the CLARA process.
The AEGIS Project, running from November 1, 2024, to October 31, 2027, exemplifies our commitment to supporting sustainable industrial practices and contributing to the global energy transition.
Stay tuned for more updates on this transformative project and our efforts to drive the energy transition forward.
